Summer Trip to Brazil 2010
When? 30 July - 13 August 2010 (subject to flight availability)
Where? Goiania (south west of Brasilia)
Price? £1600 (includes:preparation w/end April 23-25 2010 in Rugby)
Come and join a team for 2 weeks working in Brazil where Olympic fever has just begun! We are planning to send a team back to Central Brazil next summer and you could be part of it. Do you like working with young people, playing sport, visiting children’s homes and seeing how schools run in other countries? Would you like to join in church services and times of worship and maybe learn some Portuguese? We have just the opportunity for you!

It will give you the chance to make new friends as well as sharing in worship and witness of Christians in another culture. There is nothing like an overseas trip to give you insight into the global church, getting involved in youth work, learning about key issues which affect young people overseas and meeting challenges to enable your own faith to grow and develop!
Brazil is is the largest and most populated country in South America and is the fifth largest in the world. Portuguese is the main language but Spanish and English are also taught in schools. The country spans 3 time zones and has many rivers including the mighty Amazon. Scientists estimate that the total number of plants and animals found in Brazil could approach 2 million with new species being found on nearly a daily basis. About 81% of Brazilians live in an urban area and Goiania has a population of 1.25 million people and is the twelfth largest city in Brazil. There are many large and vibrant churches in Brazil and the team will have the opportunity to visit one or two of them during their stay in Goiania.
What will I be doing?
There will be pre-trip preparation both in the UK and also when the team arrive in Brazil. You will get involved in various types of ministry which may include:
- Involvement in sports and camp activities
- Involvement in schools work e.g. RE, English and other lessons
- Visiting children’s homes – one project has 350 children in two locations
- Attending Brazilian churches and taking part in teaching/worship sessions with Brazilian Christians
It won’t all be work and you will get time off to see a theme park with thermal pools!
There will be work with staff and volunteers of Brazil Youth for Christ and also with some amazing Brazilians who have already spent a year with Youth for Christ in the UK. You can enjoy teaming up with them, helping to show love and compassion through schools work, sporting activities and other mission work.
Who will I go with?
You will be joining a team of 6-8 people recruited nationally in the UK. There will be 2 leaders who have had experience of working in mission teams, including overseas.
How much do I have to raise?
The trip will cost approximately £1600, depending on flight availability and costs. This includes your flight, insurance, travel in location, accommodation, food and training. Your vaccination costs and travel to the preparation weekend is not included. You are also responsible for bringing your own personal spending money. A deposit of £100 is due with your application form and subsequent payments are made in instalments, allowing you time to raise your funds. We will also help you with lots of ways to raise your money!
What about preparation before the trip and debriefing?
There will be a training weekend from 23-25 April 2010 in Rugby where you will meet other people going on summer missions to different countries and where you will be provided with information on the location, medical advice and book lists. There will be a further training day for your specific team before leaving for Brazil. The Debrief Day is in September in the YFC Head Office, Halesowen.
