Tanzania is a beautiful country with wonderful people. It is also one of the poorest countries in the world. Home to over 41 million people, it has a land area of 342,100 sq miles, of lakes, mountain regions, tropical islands, safari parks and vast African plains.

Tanzania is home to some of the most incredible tribal diversity in Africa, but is still a very peaceful country. The Christians in particular are full of life, faith, perseverance and gratitude. Come and join us to work with them to make a difference in this nation of great beauty but also immense human need.

What will I be doing?

This is a 3-week trip where you will spend the first week in a rural part of Tanzania called Kilimatinde in the Rift Valley, where we will be renovating the children’s ward of a hospital. As you can see it is in desperate need of some colour and life! We will be joining Tanzanian youth in this project as they meet in the Diocese for a youth camp so you’ll get to make some international friends as well, through working together and relaxing by playing sports and music –all with a stunning backdrop!

The second week involves a change of scenery as we move to Iringa which is a town in the hilly Ruaha region. We will be working with FISCH, a project that works with street children aged 6-18. Most likely we will be helping them to start to build a drop-in centre. In the afternoons we will visit a local village, spend time shopping in the market and have a tour and join in at Neema Crafts Centre, a Christian run scheme that employs people with disabilities to make innovative and stunning crafts.

You will also get a beach trip and 24hrs on Safari.

Who will I go with?

This trip is in partnership with Durham YFC so you will be joining young people from Durham to make up a team of 10-12 volunteers plus leaders.

How much do I have to raise?

The trip will cost approximately £1600 depending on flight costs and availability. This includes your flight, insurance, travel in-country, food, accommodation, training, health check, a beach day trip, a 24hr safari and a contribution to project costs in-country. Vaccination costs, travel to the preparation weekend and malaria tablets are not included. You are responsible for bringing your own spending money. A deposit of £100 is due with your application form and subsequent payments are made in instalments, allowing you time to raise your funds.  We will also help you with lots of ways to raise your money!

What about preparation before the trip and debriefing?

There will be a training weekend from 23-25 April 2010 in Rugby where you will meet other people going on summer missions to different countries and where you will be provided with information on the location, medical advice and book lists. There will be a further training day for your specific team before leaving for Tanzania. The Debrief Day is in September in the YFC Head Office, Halesowen.
