Exciting Youth event tackles Celebrity, consumerism and Jesus
18 November, 2009
Through a brilliant youth event called Icon TV, Youth for Christ are challenging, educating and inspiring young people to think about the “consumer empire” under which they live, its cost on their wallets, identities, relationships, the environment, the developing world and what Jesus was talking about when He promised Freedom…
Presented by Youth for Christ’s National Evangelists Nathan Iles and Kate John, Icon TV is a youth event like no other. It uses its own custom made reality TV show, behind-the-scenes documentary and live game show, as well as an interactive texting system to create an entertaining and action-packed 2 hours! But more importantly it communicates the radical, revolutionary Jesus to young people in today’s world. Whether the Icon TV "studio audience" are Christian young people or completely unchurched, this event challenges, educates and inspires whilst putting the ball back in their court: Life under the empire? Or Jesus' radical alternative? You decide...
A recent poll of 3,000 five to 11 year olds discovered that when they grow up, most want to be sports stars, pop stars or actors and actresses.* Today’s young people need to discover the radical and revolutionary Jesus who stands in stark contrast to our celebrity-obsessed, consumer-driven culture.
Kate says: "We're so excited about taking Icon TV on the road and seeing its impact across the UK! It took a lot of work to create a show that had so many creative ideas and involved the filming of so many actors and experts, but it was worth the effort. I know God is going to use it and thousands of young people will get excited about the adventure He's calling them to."
Following the first event in Gloucester, Michelle; a parent, said that for her son and his friends, “it was really good; a challenging and thought provoking alternative to sitting on the x-box all evening”. Nathan adds, “The potential to see young people encounter God through this dynamic, interactive and evangelistic event is huge. ICON TV not only communicates the gospel but also helps young people better understand the world in which they live. We would love to bring ICON to a location near you.”
