Dare to Go, Prepare to be changed!
12 January, 2010
Around 50 people this summer made a momentous, life-changing decision – to go abroad and get involved in mission with young people for up to three weeks. Coming from all over the UK, team members were aged between 16 and 25 and flew out to Poland, Romania, Spain, Antigua, Brazil, South Africa and Uganda to take the good news of Jesus to young people.
Adam, one of the leaders, said that people in Antigua were so welcoming and willing to talk about God that the team really embraced the spirit of change and launched into things they had never done before. They ran dance workshops and a course on sexuality, visited a prison and went along with the regular volunteers of Antigua YFC as street pastors for an evening.
Mickey who went to Antigua summed it up..
’The most amazing thing I found about the overseas mission was that through the build up, the prep and the actual mission how much you have to fully rely on the Lord for this to work… a complete act of faith. It‘s really encouraged me to go on from there too, as it’s given me confidence in new areas that I didn’t think I could achieve in.’
In Brazil, Gemma had a great surprise when, during the break at one school, a young girl came up and asked her for prayer as she wanted to become a Christian - they had ‘really conveyed God’s peace to her’…One of the favourite times for Ayo was when a young lad, nicknamed ‘Rinaldo’, had the boldness to stand up to become a Christian in a camp – the open hearts of the young people was amazing! Other members of the team were moved by different sights – older men in tears of repentance on Fathers’ Day after a church sermon and children receiving what would be the only meal of the day for them. The Uganda team saw God move miraculously in schools both in Kampala and Gulu, the great faith of the YFC Uganda team as they called young people to follow Christ and God’s protection as they saw the harsh realities of living in Africa. It was ‘incredibly life-changing and life-affirming’ says Rachel, one of the leaders. In Cape Town, Poland, Spain and Romania also, the teams worked with young people and children from many different backgrounds, including the disadvantaged and poor.
Why not think and pray about coming and joining us in mission in 2010?
