The Crux – Youth for Christ’s groundbreaking Extended Schools Resource
'this looks to be an excellent resource for use in schools’ – Julian Piper, Government advisor on Extended Schools
The Crux is Youth for Christ's groundbreaking Extended Schools Resource. Each terms resource consists of 60 interactive sessions, spread over 5 key strands – providing an innovative, professional program for every day of the school year.
The Crux was developed in response to the Government’s desire to create a national network of extended schools. An extended school is one that is open from 8.00am until at least 6.00pm and is able to deliver what is known as the 'core offer'. All schools will need to be able to offer this by 2010, half by the end of 2008.
The philosophy behind this vision is the need to turn the school into the heart of its community. Youth for Christ believes that the church has its place at the heart of a school that lies at the heart of community. The development of extended schools marks an unprecedented opportunity for the local church to engage with their local schools.
The Crux is designed so that it can be delivered by teaching professionals or local volunteers. With the help of an accompanying DVD, the material can be used by schools workers, youth workers, parents or governors. In fact anyone who cares about providing quality youth work.
The resource is divided into 5 exciting contemporary strands
- Risk IT – an IT based programme which in the first term looks at animation, building towards making an animated version of the nativity story
- Cre8iv – a creative arts programme that in the first term takes biblical themes of conflict and forgiveness and explores them through dance
- Sports – a programme that has a different sport theme for each term, which uses bible teaching as the basis for understanding areas such as teamwork, trust and perseverance. The first term starts with football.
- Express – an exciting, fun program that explores issues through games and small group discussion
- Discovery – discussion-based programme that looks at current affairs, allowing students to debate and reflect on a Christian response to issues such as fear, justice and trust
